The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) yesterday said Lagos and other coastal cities globally that are less than one metre above sea level could be submerged by 2050 if the surge continues, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“The projection by scientists in the United Nations who are the authority in climate change effects, after extensive studies, says there is the likelihood of the world’s ocean rising by one meter between 2030 and 2050.
“Hence, any city less than one metre above sea level is under threat and Lagos is part of the many others,’’ NCF’s Director-General, Dr. Muhtari Aminu-Kano, said in Lagos.More here.
There’s 2 kind of news. The cursory news that tend to have the same storyline but several twists to the subject. And the news that stops you dead in your tracks. This is a case of the latter. Its such news as this that gets you asking certain questions like
- Who really are these so-called experts?
- Are they like certified futurists?
- Can we see proof of their accreditation? …….so we’re sure its not fake.
- Why Lagos city……there are several coastal dwellings around the world?
- Others would just chant the usual “God Forbid”.There’s enough on their plate to fathom the possibility of a sunk city.
But hide however you want. The truth (or at least some part of it) stares us in the face. Our city is prone to floods. With a changing climate and rising water levels, I don’t know for sure if Lagos would really be sub-merged one day.Of course,I stand with you to firmly declare “God Forbid”.But facts are facts.
Is this a wake-up call? To do something while there’s time?……………..Let’s just say its food for thought.
