What is the link between an advertisement board / billboard and a living space? None really. But if you think outside the box, long enough, you’d realize a billboard can be multi-functional. Housing the brand and the homeless (Now you didn’t see that coming). Tagged “The Gregory Project”, it was introduced by Slovakia-based firm Designdevelop. The idea is to have low-rise billboards serve a dual purpose of displaying ads and providing quality living space. The homes will be funded in part by advertisers and be cheap for renters. Although, there’ a downside. The thought of living by the highway, on the outskirts of town and far from daily conveniences sounds creepy. Except of course, you’re too bold to be true.
I know the topic sounds weird like really , can any one rent apartments on the sea. What comes close is a beach house or water front property. How can you possibly build an apartment atop water?
That’s a feat Peter Thiel is planning to accomplish not too long from now. First , who is this guy called Peter Thiel.
He is the co-founder of Paypal. If you don’t know paypal………….its best you google it (Trust Me) . Peter Andreas Thiel (born October 11, 1967) is a German-born American entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and hedge fund manager. With Elon Musk and Max Levchin, Thiel co-founded PayPal and was its CEO. He currently serves as president of Clarium Capital, a global macro hedge fund with under $700 million in assets under management, and a managing partner in The Founders Fund, a $275M venture capital fund that he launched with Ken Howery and Luke Nosek in 2005. He was an early investor in Facebook, the popular social-networking site, and sits on the company’s board of directors. Thiel was ranked #293 on the Forbes 400 in 2010, with a net worth of US$1.5 billion. However, this number now underestimates his wealth as his Facebook share alone, at a 2010 valuation, is worth US$1.7bn.Peter Thiel lives in San Francisco, California. Badt Guy!!!
And it’s not exactly how you think. Its not going to be like an oil rig thing…..no.Its a construction of residential units and work spaces atop floating barges which will be done through a company named Blueseed.
What is Blueseed. Its an innovative company spurring the idea of concept vessels i.e floating barges for work and living spaces.
That said , why floating barges , like whats the point really? The problem Blueseed intends to solve is providing a home away from home for tech innovators who can’t get a U.S work visa. The idea is while you have a business / tourist visa ,which is easier to get , you don’t have to worry about accomodation. The ship would be anchored off-coast , at a considerable distance.
Now , the project may be geared at tech innovators and young business owners , but i think the concept can be applied to other fields as well. For instance in densely populated metro areas like Lagos, imagine if you didn’t have to travel to the island daily. No traffic. No waking up at 4:30-5:00 am just to get to work on-time.The idea sounds crazy and its actually easy to critique it. But you never know. It could very well become an accepted lifestlye , a few years from now.I also think its a time for Real estate professionals to see it from this point of view and just accept it. Now this innovation may or may not be accepted here. But its knowledge is still power, init?
Below are images of floating barges. They are simply an artist’s view. Not the real thing……yet.Enjoy.
