Around the world, iconic buildings are known for their unique features. The most common being observation decks.Observation decks are probably a major reason for the never-ending competition on the “tallest building in the world”.Don’t get me wrong. These iconic structures are money-makers as tourist attractions.Like they rake in millions. And we know a couple of them.Burg Al-Arab,Burj Khalifa,Empire state building,Sydney Opera house, Chrylsler Building,Tag Mahal, Petronas Tower,Leaning tower of Pisa,One world trade center and more.So yes , they do have economic value.
We thought it was all about the decks and the spectacular views. Then somewhere in Astana-Kazakhstan,someone thought it would be cool to have a ski slope at the top of a 21-storey apartment block. A ski like mountain slope-white snow-winter season-kinda of a thing.
Named House Slalom , the proposed complex is a 21-storey ,mixed development of shops, restaurants and residential units.Designed in a U-shape , the height drops at various points to create a gradual slope that winds around the building.Unlike average ski resorts , House Slalom would be used all year. 4-6 months of the city’s winter and artificial snow for summer season.High barriers would be attached to the slopes for safety purposes. The nearest slope in Astana is 4 hours away.So , it makes a lot of sense this next door.
Designed by Shokhan Mataibekov Architects, House Slalom was a finalist in the residential category of World Architecture Festival Awards. If given the green light , it would be the first residential building with a ski slope.
Do I think its cool? No. I think its insanely cool.
